NEW People’s Army rebels abandoned one of their own — a pregnant guerrilla at that — as they fled from an encounter site in Sitio Ulayanon, Kulabugao, Impasug-ong, Bukidnon, over the weekend, the military claimed yesterday.

In a statement, Camp Evangelista said the suspected rebel, 22-year old Susan Guaynon, was rushed to a hospital after she sustained a head wound   during a 20-minute running gunbattle between Army and NPA forces on Saturday.

Brig. Gen. Eric Venoya, commander of the 403rd Infantry Brigade, said Guaynon was five months pregnant and she was grimacing in pain when soldiers found her.

The military claimed the wounded Guaynon was abandoned by some 40 of her comrades.

“It is shameful that NPA leaders keep on recruiting members with sweet and promising words yet they fail to look into the welfare of their own members,” said Venoya.

Authorities said soldiers administered first-aid treatment on Guaynon before rushing her to a hospital.

Lt. Col. Ronald Illana, commander of the 8th Infantry Battalion, said the military has already informed Guaynon’s family.

“We will see to it that she receives the kind of medical treatment needed with the help of the local government of Impasug-ong and the provincial government of Bukidnon,” Illana said.

At the encounter site, troops found an AK47, an AR18 rifle, a caliber 30 MI Carbine, a M14 rifle, an airgun and 30 backpacks belonging to members of the NPA’s northcentral Mindanao regional committee.

The military said the same group was behind the ambush of Impasug-ong mayor Mario Okinlay on July 2, 2014, and the killing of three soldiers in Sitio Kaleb, Kibalabag, Malaybalay City, in February last year.
