The foundation for achieving lasting peace and progress in Mindanao as defined within the government’s ‘One Nation’ framework lies in re-awakening and mobilizing the Filipino’s ‘bayanihan’ spirit, Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno said.

In a message welcoming delegates to the People’s Organization, Non-Government Organization, Civic Organization (PO-NGO-CO) Forum on Sustainable Peace and Inclusive Development, Mayor Moreno said ‘bayanihan’ (pagtinabangay or community spirit) is what’s needed to achieve peace and progress not only in northern Mindanao and its neighboring regions.

The forum which carried the theme ‘Forging Stronger Ties For Sustainable Peace And Inclusive Development’ also drew officials from national government agencies, the military and religious leaders like Cagayan de Oro Archbishop Antonio Ledesma.

Moreno said Cagayan de Oro City and the rest of northern Mindanao have been generally peaceful and it is up to region’s leaders and stakeholders in cooperation with the national government to spread that peace and share their progress to other regions in Mindanao.

Fueling that motivation to help one’s neighbors, Moreno said, is the realization that their success or failure will impact heavily on their fortunes and interests as shown in the fallout from the 2017 Marawi City siege.

‘Northern Mindanao has become a role model whose track is being followed by the other regions so unsa pa kaha kung sa tibuok Mindanao og sa tibuok nasud ang Northern Mindanao is the most peaceful nga rehiyon. Makab-ot nato na,” Moreno said. (Stephen Capillas of the City Information Office)
