District engineer Yolanda Egam, in an official report, 10 of the inspected public buildings were partially compliant with Batas Pambansa 344 while four others have not complied at all.

A copy of the report was provided to the city council’s committee on social services.

The inspection focused on facilities for persons with disabilities like ramps, toilets, parking space, and signages. The engineers also checked if government offices have employed at least one person with disability.

Among the government offices found to have failed to comply with the Accessibility Law are the offices of the Department of Agrarian Reform, Department of Science and Technology, Population Commission and Provincial Agrarian Reform Office.

Those that partially complied: Cagayan de Oro Water District; City Engineer’s Office, Bureau of Internal Revenue, Department of Interior and Local Government, Department of Health, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Government Service Insurance System, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, Land Transportation Office, and Commission on Audit.

Only the National Irrigation Administration  fully complied with the Accessibility Law in the city.

The 1st district office of the Department of Public Works and Highways conducted the inspection after the city council’s committee on social services tackled the request of the Persons with Disability Affairs Office for it to start discussions on the current status of the Accessibility Law implementation in the city.

PDAO has proposed the creation of a Technical Working Group on accessibility to make Cagayan de Oro a “PWD-friendly city.”
