NBI agent Jerry Tamayo said Jason Ermac, arrested during a raid  in Iligan last week, was charged with violation of Article 11, Section 16 of RA 9165 before the city’s prosecution office on Friday.

Tamayo said he was optimistic that NBI would win a conviction and that Ermac would be slapped with a life imprisonment sentence if found guilty.

The NBI said there was strong evidence that showed that 25-year old Ermac was behind the cultivation of the marijuana plantations in Upper Luinab, Iligan.

Alex Cabornay, NBI head agent in Iligan, said Ermac was surrounded by law enforcers during the raid and the suspect did not resist arrest.

Authorities spent much of their time gathering marijuana seedlings and uprooting marijuana plants during the Wednesday raids.

Cabornay said the NBI would also include Ermac’s grandmother in the case, pointing out that she owns the places that were turned into marijuana plantations.

The raids, carried out by the NBI with the help of the military and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, were the result of information provided by informants and after a three-month surveillance.

Cabornay said the NBI was looking into the possibility that there were more marijuana plantations in Iligan and its neighboring areas.
