NGCP reached another milestone with the successful energization of its newly upgraded Opol Substation in Misamis Oriental last 20 August 20. The new facility will cater to the power needs of grid-users, specifically in load centers in North Mindanao such as Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro City.

Misamis Oriental I Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Moresco I) and Cagayan Electric Power and Light Company (Cepalco) are the main benefactors of the completed substation. The facility will also address load growth in the area, which increased since the opening of the Laguindingan Airport in CDO in 2013.

With the newly-installed 75-MegaVolt Ampere (MVA) transformer, the Opol Substation is  now compliant with the N-1 requirement of the Philippine Grid Code, which is the ability of the grid to withstand a major system disturbance through a back-up equipment to prevent outage when other facilities are not available or on scheduled shutdown. This will ensure improved power quality by addressing possible low voltage that may be experienced by customers in the area. The substation is strategically placed in the middle of Lugait Substation and Tagoloan Substation to ease their loads.

Apart from the Opol Substation, NGCP is also currently working on other projects such as the Mindanao 230-kV Transmission Backbone Project which serves to provide an additional and stronger power corridor for the current and upcoming power plants in the northern and southern parts of the island.  pr
