Northern Mindanao’s Confederation of the Grain Retailers Association of the Philippines (Grecon) on Tuesday denounced the pronouncement made by the officials coming from the National Food Authority – 10 (NFA-10) on alleged extravagant and uncontrolled selling of rice by sacks in the market by the local rice traders that caused the shortage.

Grecon president Helen Osin, said the NFA pronouncement is not supported by evidence and called it “irresponsible.”

Osin said they are now challenging NFA-10 assistant director Gil Tabor to show his evidence on his allegations that local rice traders in the market sold its own supply by sacks that caused the immediate shortage of rice supply.

“Iya kaming gipakaulawan tungod kay wala man kini buhata sa among mga rice traders. Nag-serbisyo lamang kami sa mga tawo,” she said.

She said NFA-10 only supplied 50 sacks per rice traders in the market every week which is a common knowledge that is not enough for the local populace who rely much on the supply of rice coming from their office.

They only have six outlets in the public markets.

“Normal rice selling is 3 kilos per person but only last week tungod kay nag-linya man ang mga tawo gihatagan namo og 5 kilos per person para daghan maka-enjoy. Naghatag kami og lima ka kilo kay naa si administrator,” she added.

She said 50 bags per outlets only lasted for few days after market goers learned that the NFA rice supply is new and seemingly like a commercial rice. The NFA-10 has its own monitoring team that would check the number of supply in the local markets.

“Gauban pa gyud kanang ilang monitoring team when we loaded and unloaded sa supply sa merkado. Ang uban gani nga membro sa monitoring team, diha naman gani ga-atang sa merkado para gyud ilang ma-check diretso,” she explained.

Over a local radio, Tabor accused local rice traders in the market area were the one responsible of selling indiscriminately in the market and even released supply of rice by sacks during the evening.

Osin denied Tabor statements that they released supply of rice during night time. She said local public markets closed during night time.

She claimed that if Tabor cannot prove his allegations then he would suffer the consequences that the Grecon would do as an immediate response to his own action.
