LOCAL governments in Misamis Oriental should level up their monitoring and coordination with their communities and line agencies in disposing of garbage from other countries, Mayor Oscar Moreno said.

Moreno cited the waste from Hong Kong that was dumped at the Mindanao International Container Port Terminal in nearby Tagoloan town.

The waste shipment, which was misdeclared as electronic accessories, was later returned by the national government to Hong Kong.

Garbage from Canada, South Korea and Australia were also dumped in Philippine stores.

Moreno, a former Misamis Oriental governor, said this case should be a reminder to local officials to be vigilant in monitoring and reporting to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) the presence of illegally dumped trash especially those from other countries in order to immediately dispose of it or return it to its point of origin.
