THE League of Filipino Students-Northern Mindanao Region (LFS-NMR) calls on all nationalist and patriotic youth and Filipino people to strongly denounce the statement of Mayor Oscar Moreno of Cagayan de Oro stating that he is open with the idea of Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement – opening the possibility of the use of Lumbia airport as a facility to store military equipment and supplies of US troops.

We are dismayed and enraged by the pronouncement of Mayor Moreno. It is clear enough that there are still bunches of Buencamino and Paterno who had been loathed by General Luna in his time whom he disclose as “birhen na naniniwala sa pag-ibig ng isang puta.”

The statement of Mayor Moreno is a clear manifestation that he’s going through a historical amnesia, forgetting the historic battles our forefathers had fought for during the Filipino-American War. Let us never forget the Battle of Cagayan led by Gen. Nicolas Capistrano, the Battle of Macahambus cave commanded by Col. Velez and the Battle of Agusan Hill by Captain Vincent Roa and many more battles against the US colonizers.

We are reminding Mayor Moreno of our history if indeed he is going through historical amnesia. If not, then clearly we have in our midst once again a lackey of the United States parroting the lines of the Liberal Party.

Moreno and his Liberal Party allies’ display of puppetry to the US would inevitably result to gross human rights violations and environmental degradation, which we and our forefathers’ have had experienced with the colonizer’s presence. Hence, Edca will be more detrimental than beneficial if there are US troops stationed in our doorsteps.

We challenge Moreno and his administration to reconsider his decision and should always put into consideration the interests of the Cagayanon, which might be at risks if he would insist to disclose on the proposal.

Even before Edca, the armed forces and military of the Philippines had never benefited and even failed to advance significantly despite the Visiting Forces Agreement, Mutual Defense Agreement and Mutual Logistics Support Agreement.

We call on the youth not to put into waste what our heroes have gallantly fought for. Together with all nationalist and patriotic Filipino people, let us once again be victorious in our struggle to junk Edca and fight for genuine freedom as what we have done in the course of history.

LFS-NMR urges the youth to unite and defend national sovereignty, living up to the challenge of our national heroes who fought hard for our freedom and independence. —Kristine Cabardo, LFS-NMR chairperson, lfsnmr@gmail.com

‘Loose Thread’ Money

A REPORT is circulating in the political scene that the group that calls itself “Loose Thread” has “invaded” the flagaising rites of Barangay Tignapoloan one Monday morning.  The “invasion” was so sudden that it caught the barangay chairman off-guard.

According to the report, the group brought a refrigerated van and distributed loaves of ham and keso de bola to those in attendance.  From there, the group was to proceed to other nearby barangays.

Another report was that the group’s leaders gate-crashed into a family reunion in Kauswagan but was repelled by the clan leader who did not want the family affair politicized.

The same group was seen distributing ham and probably other items in bags with markings denoting a party-list group at the COC-Phinma gym. And several other similar reports have been circulating.

It appears that this group has deep pockets. Where could the money have come from?

The way money is being spent should make every Mindanaoan think hard where we are going. Do we agree that our homeland be sold?

Let’s be careful. —Peter Clarete, peterclarete@ gmail.com
