Letter to the Editor

AS a citizen of this country who only wants to live a harmonious and peaceful life, I have worries on the series of encounters and criminalities reported in the newspapers, radio and television. In the history of our country, we, the Filipino people have only one struggle—that is to claim and experience freedom… freedom from foreign intrusions and freedom from internal conflicts such what happened in Mindanao right now.

The presence of the insurgents, the New People’s Army (NPA) in this country, has long been a problem that our government long to resolve. But despite their diligent efforts, NPAs persist to exist and continue to spread fear and terror to every community they reach.

We, the Filipino people, should not be victims of this war or should I say “foolishness” forever. We have already witnessed and experience what the NPAs struggle has brought us and we could already predict what it will bring to the future. We cannot be blind or be deaf with what we see and hear in our surroundings. We all wanted freedom, we all wanted peace and this should be everyone’s motivation to fight against this NPAs.

If the NPAs believe that the armed struggle is their ultimate way to attain their goals, then we should remain our faith in the parliamentary way. As what our national hero did, we should not stop and should pursue the effort in influencing and informing others what these NPAs have been doing to us. We should continue to encourage our family, our friends, our neighbors, and the whole Filipino community to join us in this struggle. We should continue to inspire each and every one of us in this endeavor of abhorring and condemning these NPAs.

Fact is, these NPAs remain because of the support given to them by us, the Filipino people. Many of us, including those in abroad have joined organizations that seem to support cause for the Filipino people but in truth and in fact, they exist to support the NPAs. A sad fact but it is true, we are often deceived and chose to believe in the sweet-coated words and encouragement by the organizations or by the NPAs themselves. We often chose them and often blinded from the truth that we see in our community.

It is in this light that we should start appreciating what our government has been doing to help us. We should start to be enlightened with the effort that our government has been exerting to help us win in our struggle. We should start to be liberal on the presence of our troops—the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police in our community. We should understand that without them, our struggle against the NPAs, our struggle for freedom would not be successful.

We should be one on this. Instead of going against the government, we as citizens have great things to contribute in this country. If we could only try to understand and support our government in its plans and programs, the freedom, the peace and development that we have been longing for will be a reality. –Dianne Abella, abelladianne83@gmail.com
