THE city council has declared a 45-hectare property in Sitio Boracan, Barangay Pagalungan as the new sanitary landfill of Cagayan de Oro.

The declaration came shortly before Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin Uy and many councilors joined the entourage of Mayor Oscar Moreno who left for New York this week.

In 2011, the city council passed Ordinance 12081-2011 that declared  34 hectares in Sitio Pamalihi in Barangay Pagatpat as the city’s sanitary landfill. But the plan to establish the city landfill in the area did not materialize due to environmental issues.

The City Legal Office then recommended that the 2011 ordinance be repealed for being moot and academic.

The ordinance was endorsed by the committees on environment and on laws and rules chaired by Councilors Enrico Salcedo and Ian Mark Nacaya, respectively. (SP)
