SUPPORTING the silk industry in Mindanao, Cagayan de Oro City legislators headed by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin V. Uy on Monday enacted an ordinance authorizing Mayor Oscar S. Moreno to enter into and sign the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Department of Science and Technology-10; the Provincial Science and Technology Center in Misamis Oriental (PSTC-MisOr) and with DOST-Philippine Textile Research and Institute (DOST-PTRI) for the establishment of a silkworm rearing center in Barangay Balubal.

The DOST-10 has identified the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology under the National Science and Technology Plan, as one of the strategic programs to empower the poorest and depressed communities of the country.

For its part, the PSTC-Misamis Oriental is mandated to identify the needs and opportunities in science and technology and develop institutional linkages with provincial offices of other departments, local government units, and academe and non-government offices.

Meanwhile, the DOST-PTRI will undertake the transfer of completed textile and textile-related researches to end-users or via linkage units of other government agencies and undertake technical services and provide training programs.

Under the MOA, the city shall spearhead the implementation of the project in accordance with the approved project proposal and earmark P268,350 in accordance with the approved budget. (SP)
