DESPITE Cagayan de Oro being declared as Filariasis free in 2015, the city government through the City Health Office intensifies its campaign against the disease by conducting Transmission Assessment Survey starting today until Oct. 11 in different public elementary schools in the city.

City Health Officer Dr. Lorraine Nery, said being filariasis-free implies that there were no new cases recorded in the last six years since 2015.

However, their campaign of continuing assessment especially children aged six to seven years old will be given utmost attention.

Filariasis also commonly known as “elephantiasis” is a disease caused by a parasite transmitted by mosquito.

Symptoms include fever, headache, body pains, coughs, chill, pain and swelling of the breast, vagina, scrotum enlargement for men and enlargement of arms and legs.

In its advisory, the Department of Health advices people to wear long-sleeve shirts and long pants especially for those working in farm areas, and sleeping under a mosquito net.

It added that medicines DEC (Diethylcarbamazine Citrate and albendazole) are given once in five years. (abigail c. malalis for cio)
