JOURNALISTS in the city yesterday gathered at the Press Freedom Monument on A. Velez St. to commemorate the 6th year and seventh month of the infamous Maguindanao Massacre.

The Cagayan de Oro Press Club (COPC) that spearheaded the activity also issued a manifesto, appealing to the incoming Duterte administration to give the victims and their families justice.

“Today, as we commemorate the sixth year and seventh month since the single most grisly attack on press freedom–the Ampatuan Massacre–we challenge President-elect Rodrigo Duterte to be true to his campaign slogan that ‘Change is coming,’” reads part of the COPC manifesto.

They said the COPC  would also not stand idly by as media workers continue to be targeted for doing their job to promote transparency and accountability in government.

The group added: “We are expressly concerned with the recent pronouncements of Duterte regarding the extrajudicial killings.

“We will not be cowed and we continue to call on government to fasttrack all cases of extrajudicial killings.”
