CAGAYAN DE ORO City legislators have enacted an ordinance authorizing Mayor Oscar Moreno to enter into and sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs) for the installation and maintenance of a continues Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver in the city.

The GPS receiver would provide the city and its people with timely information on any earthquake incident in their respective areas.

Philvolcs is currently developing the GPS Network which will contribute to the realization of the objectives of Executive Order No. 128. For its part, the city has an available facility that is best suited to host one continuous GPS receiver.

Under the memorandum, the Philvolcs shall provide the city with reports and other relevant information related to the continuous GPS receiver installed in the city and shall immediately respond to problems arising from the equipment.

For its part, the city shall allow the installation of the GPS receiver in the premises of its building and coordinate with Philvolcs to ensure its safety and security, among others.

The ordinance was reviewed and endorsed by the committees on environment and on laws and rules chaired by Councilors Enrico Salcedo and Ian Mark Nacaya, respectively. (sp)
