THE Cagayan de Oro City Water District (COWD) has never ceased to look for means to address the challenge of an increasingly growing demand for adequate, safe and portable water supply.

Addressing the issue of nonevenue water (NRW) is crucial to the attainment of this objective and is among COWD’s priority concerns.

It has, in fact, sought the assistance of various local and international organizations and has been fortunate to have availed of this through grants such as the one from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Better management of NRW would mean improved water pressure, more water available for use and increased revenues for COWD that would redound to better quality service for the water consumers.

Just very recently, COWD has been a recipient of a grant worth $800,000 from the United States Agency for International Development (Usaid), through its Be Secure Project, and Coca Cola Foundation Philippines.

The grant is in the form of a technical assistance for NRW Reduction Strategy and Implementation. Basically, it will enable COWD to develop, manage, maintain and update its own Geographic Information System (GIS) Database and Hydraulic Modelling. Miya, a global leader in optimizing urban water efficiency, will implement the project which is to be completed in twenty (20) months. During this period, the team will be doing surveys, excavations and some pipe-laying.

The cooperation of the water consumers and the public in general, will greatly help in ensuring the successful implementation of the project. pr
