AT LEAST 4,000 food packs were distributed by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) to at least six western side barangays in the city affected by Jan. 16 flashfloods in the city.

Barangays Iponan, Bulua, Patag, Kauswagan, Balulang, and Carmen which have yet to be given food packs by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD 10) were the beneficiaries of Pagcor’s relief operations.

Pagcor regional representative Antonio Cabarubias said they went to the city and purchased food packs on Thursday after they received order coming Malacañang and Pagcor chairman Andrea Domingo to assist affected families in Cagayan de Oro through the city government which was represented by George Goking, president of the Councilor’s League in the city.

Ginagmay pa lamang kini nga hinabang og andam kami mohatag kung unsa man ugali ang gikinahanglan nga tabang alang sa mga na-affected sa baha,” Cabarubias said.

Carla Taboclaon told Gold Star Daily she was still terrified when flood waters suddenly swept into their home in Sitio Bulao, Iponan in the evening of Jan. 16, 2017. The murky water quickly rose waist-deep, forcing the 41-year old housewife, her husband and their two children to flee for safety.

Like Taboclaon and her family, Low Pressure Area (LPA) that brought heavy rains left thousands of families in Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and the nearby provinces homeless and devastated.

Cabarubias said this is only the first tranche of the agency’s relief operations.

Pagcor has so far distributed relief packs to other cities affected by floods. It also provided relief goods to other families badly hit by the flooding in Davao regions in the previous years.

He said rehabilitation efforts are underway in many affected communities. The immediate priority now is to provide the residents with basic necessities like food and water.
