In a press briefing in Lima, Peru, presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said President Duterte hoped that “both sides would come to terms with the burial of the former president,” as it is legal as the Supreme Court had so decided.

“The President also hoped that everybody would find a space in their hearts to forgive and set free those who have hurt or injured them,” Abella said.

Meanwhile, he clarified that the choice of interment date was the sole decision of the Marcos family, and even the President only learned about it on his arrival in Peru yesterday.

Duterte is in Peru to attend the 2016 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Leaders’ Summit.

“The decision to bury the late President Marcos today is a personal decision of the Marcos family and we respect their choice of date for the interment. The Supreme Court lifted the status quo ante order and allowed the burial of the remains and the President (Duterte) adheres to the ruling of the High Court,” Abella said.

He added: “We understand there is a segment of society against the burial at the LNMB. The President fully understands this and has allowed any form of mass action as long as it is legal, peaceful and in accordance with the law.

“It has been a few decades and in fact practically a new generation has grown up not knowing about the Marcos years. While we put things in perspective later, we certainly hope that the Filipinos would be able to move on.” (pna)
