ILIGAN City–The Coast Guard here yesterday said it would strictly enforce a law against boat and other watercraft owners who fail to register with the government.

Authorities said the registration should be done under the Coast Guard Security Numbering System, a provision in the National Coast Guard Law and Coast Guard Memorandum Circular 2017-001 that was issued on March 31, 2017.

The system is also known as the Safety, Security and Environmental Numbering System for all Philippineegistered vessels and/or watercraft.

Failure to register under SSEN could mean a written warning  to the first offender. For the second offense, the boat owner could be detained and be released only upon compliance to the requirements.

Coast Guard Lt. Commander Alberto Ferre Alberto Ferre said the boat registration is free of charge.

“Boats without registration numbers will be confiscated by us,” he said. (janet braza)
