Pursuant to Republic Act no. 10533, otherwise known as the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, Deped will implement the new Philippine Basic education System which covers one year of Kindergarten, six years of elementary, four years of junior high school, and an additional two years of senior high school dubbed as the K-to-12 Basic Education Program.

The Senior High School Program will be implemented starting School Year 2016-2017, needing immense logistical and financial support from all stakeholders from national to local levels.

Misamis Oriental Vice Gov. Jose Mari Pelaez, author of the resolution, said it is high time for the country to fully embrace the K-to-12 Basic Education Program to enable young people to compete in the global and international stage with world-class competencies, skills and values.

The Philippines remains to be the only country in Asia and one of the three remaining countries in the world that have yet to implement the twelve-year program of basic education, placing the graduated at a disadvantaged position in an increasingly global market.

The implementation of the K-to-12 Basic Education Program has fareaching and beneficial effects on the quality of basic education system of the country which is much needed for the upcoming 2015 Asean Economic Community Integration as the K-to-12 Basic Education curriculum has been designed to match with the basic education system of other Asean Member Communities.

Pelaez further said all things considered, the K-to-12 Basic Education Program will redound to the benefit of the young people and their families especially the poor and the underprivileged, of respective communities and the industries within, and of the country as a whole. PIA
