I HAVE been attending several conferences, workshops and learnings lately. Most of the speakers talk now about branding and re-branding, inventing and re-inventing, creating good personal brands.

Companies spend millions to create and promote brands that effectively communicate who they are and what they offer by working on the kind of image their companies represent. Everyone’s constantly updating, improving and reinventing. And not only are companies doing it, but even civic organizations.

Every company and organization has a brand—and so do you. Whether you know it or not, everything you wear, say, and do—both online and offline—defines your brand. Personal brand is our most valuable asset, business asset if you are into business, political asset if you are politicians. A personal brand is more than a name or a logo. Personal branding is not about positions, status; it’s about impact, value and service, for people who create an impression, a perception in the mind of others. It is the way you market yourself to the world, how your personality influences and affects others.

Having an impressive portfolio and credentials are not enough anymore to be attractive to our society.

According to Tom Peters, “the Brand You…

“All of us need to understand the importance of branding. We are CEOs of our own companies: Me, Inc. To be in business today, most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called you.”

I’ve always believed that the world now is all about good packaging/presentation. That’s the reason why I took up programs on image consulting and style coaching because I’m a salesperson and I want to stand out in the crowd.

You are always selling yourself to the world in all you do and how you do it, not just for business pursuits, regardless of what profession you are in–salesman, entrepreneur, speaker, student, musician, photographer, teachers, etc. Mind you, even housewives need a brand. You, too, need to have your own brand.

Whether you believe it or not, you are branding yourself by what you do and refuse to do. So it’s about time to start on working on our personal branding properly.

Your brand is created through the image and message you communicate to the public. It is the way others see you that will differentiate you from others. Your brand should communicate clarity, credibility, consistency and trust. Without you knowing it, people judge you the way you are.

It’s important to build a personal brand because it’s the only thing you’re going to have. Your reputation in the new business world is the in-thing now, so you’ve got to be good in who you are and what you are doing. You can’t hide anything. You’ve got to be out there fast.

You don’t know where and how to start?

Ask yourself, “What is it that really matters to me now? What do I want?”

Then act on your answer, focus on it, and make it happen.

A successful brand is always built on the foundation of passion and purpose.

You and only you are in charge of building your own brand. It takes time to build a brand. There is nothing like an overnight success. It is a continuous process that needs to be worked on. You must work constantly on shaping your brand, redefining it and shaping it along the way. It is a life-long learning, unlearning and re-learning process.

Begin today.

Enjoy the journey of building your own brand.

Stand out.
