Iligan City — A player during a sports fest held early this week died in the course of playing basketball.

Mary Ann Mahinay told reporters that she was shocked upon knowing that her husband, Melvin Mahinay, 29, suddenly collapsed while playing and died minutes after.

Her husband Melvin, she said was playing basketball on Tuesday at around 2:00 pm. He works at a slaughterhouse, at Merila, this city. She said the sportsfest was held on the grounds of the amphitheater at Buhanginan hills.She said that it took around 10 minutes to have her husband taken to an ambulance where he was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.There were no medics at the games. The sportsfest is sponsored by the city government.

The couple has two young children and lives at Purok 16, Palao, this city, where the wake is being held. She added that right now she is in a quandary in the face of such incident. Melvin, she said, moonlights as a “habal-habal” driver.

When asked about her husband’s health before the incident, she replied that recently her husband had to go slow on eating rice because he was feeling pain at his nape.

The area, where the games were held, is an open space with no roofing above.
