Police said they arrested the 27-year-old Paul Ampo of Calaanan, Canitoan  at around 5 pm the other day, for snatching the mobile phone of a jeepney passenger.

Macasandig police chief Maj. Erickson Sabanal said Ampo works as a “job order” street sweeper at city hall, and the suspect confessed to the crime but explained he was just forced to do it because of money problems.

Sabanal identified the victim as Jerasel Paño, 23, of Ylaya, Carmen, this city.

“Galibog nako unsa akong buhaton kay gimingaw na kaayo ko sa akong asawa ug anak nga tua sa Manila ug kinahanglan ko’g P5,000 para pamasahe nila pauli diri,” Ampo said in between sobs.

Sabanal said the Ampo and the victim were riding a public jeepney from Carmen and when they reached 12th-26th Sts. in Nazareth, Ampo told the driver to stop, and he suddenly he grabbed the cellphone.

Police officers who were in the area quickly arrested Ampo, and returned the cell phone to its owner.

Ampo is now temporarily detained awaiting charges.
