City police director Senior Supt. Faro Antonio Olaguera said the security operations would involve city hall, the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office, Camp Alagar, and the army’s 4th Infantry Division.

The debate, the first of three and the only one scheduled in Mindanao, is scheduled in the afternoon of Feb. 21.

Olaguera said Cocpo, this early, has started closely coordinating with other security units of government in order to map out a comprehensive plan to secure the presidential candidates.

“We are prepared, and we will do everything together with the local government unit,  the 4th ID, Camp Alagar and other stakeholders to ensure the success of the presidential debate,” Olaguera said.

He said the police is waiting for specific instructions from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to finalize plans that were initially tackled during a security meeting at the Cocpo headquarters in Jan. 11.

Olaguera assured that Cocpo was ready to use all its resources to keep the city, particularly the CU area, peaceful and orderly.

“We’re honored that this debate will be done here,” he said.

Mayor Oscar Moreno also welcomed the announcement that the first presidential debate would be held in the city.

“We are so happy not only because we will witness that but also because we will take part in organizing that national event,” Moreno said.

He said the public debate would allow the electorate to know the presidential candidates better, and help voters in choosing the country’s next leader during the May elections. (nitz arancon)
