The event, dubbed as the 12th International Game Fishing Tournament, is set to be held on April 11 to April 14 in the town of Pilar, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte.

The Department of Tourism in Caraga and the Surigao del Norte tourism office are collaborating with the Pilar town government in organizing the tournament.

“We are expecting around 80 participants for this year’s tournament. Right now, we already have around 40 registered participants, and we expect the numbers to double in the next few days,” said Josephine Egay, head of the the provincial tourism office.

Egay said will be the first time for the Pilar town government to spearhead the event with support from the tourism provincial office and DOT in Caraga.  “While the local government of Pilar will be at the forefront of the tournament, the province has extended support to make the event a success together with the DOT Caraga regional office.”

Ana Nuguid, DOT regional director, said organizers are expecting a much bigger event this year.

“With Siargao Island becoming more popular we are expecting more participants this year for the game fishing tournament. Last year, we had around 65 foreign and local anglers, and so this year, we are expecting it to be more than 70 to 80 participants. We also expect more tourists arrivals to witness the event,” said Nuguid.

Nuguid said organizers expecting anglers from different parts of Asia, Europe, United States, Australia to compete with their Filipino counterparts.
