IT is appalling to think that a perfectly functional road in front of Liceo de Cagayan University was smashed just so it could be reconstructed again. For what? Obviously not for urban development. I mean it would only take one to drive a bit further to see what road needs urgent repair-surely not the one fronting Liceo.

Yet such project is getting away with murder. With all the unnecessary hassle it has cause the public, there seems to be no way of rectifying such grievance caused by poor judgment ( or vested interest) of those who are part of its approval. Such sight has become a normal thing during elections when in fact it should be tabooed. The facts are too clear at plain view that no valid excuse could ever justify such repair to be prioritized over and above other pending repairs with utmost urgency.

The sight of the construction still ongoing is a great insult not just to the university fronting it being an institution of higher learning and having been producing topnotch civil engineers but to us all educated Cagay-anons as well including the city legislator who bears the name of the park/mall fronting it as well. Yet what can we do? We don’t know how to make the people behind such idiocy take full accountability of such utter stupidity. We don’t know where to bring this case for appropriate and speedy action. While we put up with the disturbance it causes us day in and day out, some few individuals are getting out smiling with I would believe a hefty sum. I mean, someone or a few obviously benefited from such repair either from service contracts or from purchase and of course from SOPs if such exist.

This is the perfect time to challenge our elected officials- from congressmen, governor, mayor, and legislators both in the province and in the city. If they truly are for the welfare of the people then they will not allow this to come to pass without somehow a certain justice being served -unless they benefit from it too. And if that be the case, what hope do we have left?

While election should be celebrated with much glee as this cements the spirit of democracy in our country, the past years and this one included shows how our own Filipino politicians mock democracy by manipulating it to gain/remain in power; the extensive repairs of perfectly fine roads from all parts of the country during elections just proves that.

Back to my point, will we allow such blatant incompetence (to say the least) to happen on plain view? It would make us more stupid than them if we let them get away with it. And who else could better push for our cause and take action other than those we put to office last elections? If they continue to keep a blind eye on this then why would we entrust them again?

This should be an eye opener to us public voters. Public office is not for everyone. It is surely not for those who have no balls to protect our welfare.
