The victim is 24-year-old James Patrick Tablon of Barra, Opol town in Misamis Oriental.

Tablon was rushed to the Polymedic Plaza in Kauswagan where he is struggling for life at presstime due to multiple injuries, including one in the head.

Michael Bustamante, assistant manager of radio station DxIF-Bombo Radyo where Tablon works as a reporter, said the unattended backhoe belongs to the company Ven Ray Construction Corp. that has been contracted by the Department of Public Works and Highways for a drainage project in Kauswagan.

Its website shows that the firm is Cebu-based, and it described itself as a “family corporation owned and managed by spouses Ray and Venus Manigsaca” with main office is at AppleOne Tower on Mindanao Ave. corner Biliran Road, Cebu Business Park.

The construction firm is primarily engaged in general construction that builds houses, commercial and industrial buildings, barracks, piers, dams, roads, bridges and other horizontal, and vertical engineering works.

Bustamante said the backhoe was left parked on the roadside without a proper early warning device.

Lawrence Geralde, Tablon’s fellow radio reporter, said the victim was heading home at around 2 am when he accidentally crashed into the backhoe along the highway. The equipment was there because it was being used for digging in line with the DPWH drainage project.

Geralde said the impact was so strong that Tablon’s crash helmet cracked.

Tablon was unconscious when witnesses rushed him to Polymedic Plaza. He remains unconscious in an intensive care unit at presstime.

Tablon is a relatively new reporter. He has been working at radio station DxIF for about three years now.
