Police yesterday concluded that it was a case of robbery, noting that the killer took P140 thousand in cash from the victim identified as Robert Luz of Jasaan, Misamis Oriental.

The 38-year old Luz, a son of a retired police officer, had just encashed a check at a Banco de Oro branch and was walking, on his way back to the canteen, when he was attacked past 3 pm.

Investigators said the money was intended to pay the salaries of workers under Luz who rode a jeepney from the bank.

Cugman police station commander Chief Insp. Ian Borinaga said the robber shot Luz to the chest twice with a caliber .45 pistol.

Luz was rushed to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center where he died at around 6 pm.

Investigators found two empty shells at the crime scene.

Police quoted witnesses as saying that the robber fled on a motorcycle.

Borinaga said investigators have a suspect in mind but were still collecting more data in order to build a case.

Senior Supt. Nelson Aganon, city police director, stepped up security measures in Tablon as a result of the first robbery-slay case that happened in the city since he assumed as head of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office.

Aganon said the measures include finetuning checkpoint operations in the area.

He also ordered investigators to look into other angles and possible motives.
