Rotary International District 3870 welcomed the new Rotary year with the “Walk for Peace” on July 1, 2015 with the theme “Peace: A Gift to the World.”

For RID 3870’sZone 1, the Walk’s participants assembled at Gaston Park, Cagayan de Oro at 5:30 a.m. which by the way is not early at all for people who do start walking, even running or biking at 5 a.m. These are the people who sleep at 10 p.m. when the insomniac is still wiping bread crumbs and wayward potato chips off her chin.

AZumba session with instructor Robert Lopez served as warmup and later as cool down for the participants, and there was march music by the Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School (MOGCHS) Drum and Lyre Corps to keep the participants going while walking.

More than 100 Rotarians from Zone 1’s 14 clubs participated in the Walk, with the Rotary of Club of Kalayaan Cagayan de Oro, led by its president who happens to be yours truly, having an attendance of 16 members and one spouse.

The Golden Friendship Eagles Club, headed by Pres. Hadji Ibrahim EfrenLibot, the husband of Pres. Joyce Libot of RC Carmen Valley, also joined the activity.

After the walk, a program was held at Gaston Park which began with an interfaith invocation led by Major Farouk Sarip of the 4th ID Mosque,Patag, CDO; Rev. Ricardo Yanez Jr., senior minister of the UCCP; and Rev. Fr. Stephen Olario of the Immaculate Conception Parish, Bulua, CDO. Fr. Steve happens to be a Kalayaan Rotarian. Then, RID 3870 District Governor Leo Ochia delivered a message about our ultimate wish for peace especially here in Mindanao.

Zone 1 Council of Presidents Chair Pres. ConchitinaLagonera of RC CDO East Urban gave the welcome remarks and acknowledged the participants, and Pres. Joyce Libotwas the emcee. At the end of the program were the ceremonial release of balloons and the singing of “Let There Be Peace On Earth.”

Well, there was peace on Earth onceRoads and Traffic Administration temporarily closed the streets to traffic so we couldwalk by safely.
