ILIGAN City–The 17th of December, not the 16th, is the day of commemoration of the storm “Sendong” devastation four years ago as far as this city is concerned.

While Cagayan de Oro marks Dec. 16 and Dec. 17 as the dates of the environmental tragedy, Iliganons remember it on Dec. 17 as the destruction started here at past 1 am exactly four years ago yesterday.

Acmad Musa, president of the Sendong Survivors Movement, yesterday led his members in walking from Tubod Bridge to this city’s “Ground Zero” which was at the bank of the Mandulog River.

There, from the banks and into the now calm waters of the river, they floated a likeness of a coffin to symbolize the deaths on Dec. 17, 2011.

They lighted candles, too, prayed and spoke about their experiences.

A few hours later, a Mass was officiated at the nearby San Lorenzo Ruiz church in Hinaplanon.

Tarpaulins were hung, showing some names of  Iliganons who died in the floods, among them media workers Michael Kundiman and Eni Alsonado.

Earlier,  the Sendong Survivors Movement led by Musa discussed issues and concerns on several relocation sites for Sendong survivors in the city.

Among their concerns were on the lack of water services and financial aid that have yet to be given to the survivors after four years.
