OZAMIZ City — Some 807 senior citizens in Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental have received P1, 500 each as part of their social pension from the national government.

The cash handed over by City Mayor Irene Luansing and granting of the benefits for the elderly was based on the Republic Act. No. 9994 or the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2003.

Under the law, underprivileged elders are entitled to receive P500 monthly pension every quarter of the year. Seniors who are disabled, sickly, frail, no permanent source of income, and no regular support from anyone in the family may avail of the said program.

Mayor Luansing said there are 5, 703 beneficiaries as Social Pensioners for the indigent Senior Citizens and this year P8,554,500 has been allocated for the Social Pension Program for Indigent Senior Citizens in Ozamiz City.

City Social Welfare and Develoment Officer Marivic Kaamino said recipients are identified through the National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction.

The NHTS-PR is a database of poor households who are potential beneficiaries of social protection programs of the government.
