BUTUAN City – The nine-person Philippine Sepak Takraw team with two players from Caraga bagged the bronze medal in the Team Double Event Men after reaching the semi-final rounds during the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games on Thursday.

The team lost to Myanmar, 2-1,during the Match No. 12, semi-final round after three sets, with the Philippines winning first and Myanmar winning on the 2nd and final set, Thursday morning, at the Subic Gymnasium.   

Two of the players from the Sepak Takraw Philippine team come from Caraga: Elly Jan Nituda from Butuan City and Joshua Gleen Bullo from Gigacuit town in Surigao del Norte.

The rest of the team members for the Team Double Event Men are Mark Joseph Gonzales, Jason Huerte, Joeart Jumawan, John Jeffrey Morcillos, Rheyjey Ortouste, Vince Alyson Torno and Ammiel Elijah Bardaje.

During Match No. 13 of the semi-final rounds, Indonesia defeated Vietnam, 2-0, placing both the Philippines and Vietnam to receive bronze medals while Indonesia won gold against Myanmar’s final match of the event.

The Philippines opened the Sepak Takraw 2019 SEA Games campaign with two gold medal wins at the men and women’s hoops event on Sunday.

Metodio Suico, Jason Huerte, John Bobier, Emmanuel Escote and John Jeffrey Morcillos brought home the gold for the Philippine men’s team. While playing coach Deseree Autor, Josefina Maat, Sara Jean Kalalo, Jean Marie Sucalit, Mary Ann Lopez and Abigail Sinugbohan won the gold for women’s event.

According to Glenn Teves, Sea Games Sepak Takraw technical staff that while the team lost to Myanmar, the players would still have two categories where they can redeem themselves and a chance for gold.

The Philippine Sepak Takraw team was set to compete in the 12-player Team Regu event starting yesterday, and in the five-player team Best Regu event tomorrowin the hopes to gain more gold in Sepak Takraw, said Tevez.
