The city’s Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) is set to take a more active role in the community with the formation of a youth volunteer group in the barangays.

And they found an ally in Liga ng mga Barangay president and Councilor Yan Lam Lim, who said the SK Federation and the ABC Federation are both the most ‘grounded’ as they have direct grassroots constituencies.

SK Federation chairman and Councilor John Michael Seno said they are organizing the volunteer groups to help in delivering services to their fellow youth and eventually across their community.

The 22-year-old ex officio member of the City Council representing the SK Federation said they have thought of organizing barangay youth volunteer group to have more young people engaged in community services.

“The SK, as a council is primarily for policy making and project development. We want all young people in our communities to get involved,” Seno said.

By design, the Liga ng mga Barangay said Seno is their natural ally. “In the barangays, we look up to the barangay captain. In City Hall, we look up to Councilor Alam Lim as our big brother, who can help us link with the city’s father – Mayor Oscar  Moreno, for better services and more projects,” said, a criminology graduate who put on hold taking the professional licensure exam in order to serve full time the SK Federation and the City Council.

Asked what Lim can do to the SK, he said he can bridge us to the mayor and other government agencies. And he himself can sponsor projects for us, added Seno.

“We had hoped we can get more projects from the national government through our congressman, unfortunately, we at the second district has gotten none,” Seno said who went on saying, “may na lang naa si Councilor Alam ready and willing to help us.”

Lim for his part welcomes the youth volunteer program of the SK Federation. “They have my full support. We will work together in mobilizing resources to support their projects. I will try to fill in the gaps,” Lim said.
