Orprecio’s observation was seconded by DA Undersecretary Jose Reaňo who was guest of honor and speaker of the recently concluded 13th Annual General Membership Meeting and Training Conference of the Cold Chain Association of the Philippines held in Surigao City.

Reaňo who is undersecretary for livestock admitted that many things and work must be done to improve conditions of the slaughterhouses in Caraga Region saying some slaughterhouses who are already in sordid state, do not only need total rehabilitation but also infusing new and latest facilities available in the market.

Orprecio claimed that there were times when he and his team saw personally how some Caraga slaughterhouses slaughter livestock especially pigs.

“Upon seeing it is better to stay vegetarian when I personally saw how unsanitary they slaughter the livestock. Here in Caraga Region, the slaughter usually done on the floor which is at times unsanitary because of mix ups, of waste and meat” Orprecio added.

“This is precisely why we include in our project under PCCP the improvement of at least 12 municipal slaughterhouses in Caraga Region owned and administered by said municipalities and six slaughterhouses in the six cities which includes Butuan City Slaughterhouse which needs rehab too”, Orprecio.

“There is really a dire need to improve them. We need healthy and sanitary food kung hindi food poisoning po yan and it will only one food poisoning before we all realized the need to act which is now” Orprecio said.

Reano said the Department of Agriculture central office Manila through NMIS or the National Meat Inspection Service will help build buildings for the slaughterhouses while the LGU concerned provide lots while PCCP will provide facilities, trainings and others.
