THE city council’s committee on roads and traffic management is set to tackle Councilor Lordan Suan’s proposed ordinance that would exempt from real property tax payment owners of vacant lots in commercial districts who would turn their properties into free public parking lots.

Suan said he proposed this because the city has been experiencing difficulties with parking spaces.

He said the lack of parking spaces has become a perennial headache as far as motorists are concerned.

Suan said the traffic jams and rampant illegal parking of vehicles have even caused misunderstanding among motorists and traffic law enforcers to the extent that some even resulted in violence.

He cited the importance of parking spaces, saying this would entice consumers to frequent establishments, resulting in sales increases and consequently, increased tax collections.

Suan said that while some statutes discourage lot owners from having their lands idle through the imposition of higher real property taxes, his proposal would grant incentives to lot owners who would convert or allow the use of their vacant lots as parking areas. (clo)
