The Army’s 58th Infantry Battalion commander Lt. Col. Francis Carandang said residents in the upland villages in Balingasag scrambled in panic after an unidentified number of armed men fired indiscriminately. The 58IB is based in nearby Claveria town.

Carandang said the armed suspects fired their guns for about three minutes. He believed that the armed suspects belonged to the NPA’s Guerrilla Front 4B.

He said the suspects fled in different directions when he deployed his troopers to respond to the incident.

Carandang said no injuries among the villagers were reported.

For his part, Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano said the latest suspected NPA attack could seriously compromise Capitol’s efforts in boosting tourism in the province.

It can be recalled that Emano issued a travel advisory stopping tourists from visiting areas in the province known to be bailiwicks of the Maoist guerrillas.
