A BARANGAY councilor in one of the sub-urban barangays in Cagayan de Oro City surrendered to authorities after shooting to death a drinking buddy and wounding another over a heated argument early this morning.

Police Major Allan Cairel, Macasandig police station commander, identified the suspect as Jonathan Borja, residing at the said barangay

Borja surrendered to the pursuing policemen with the handgun he used in the shooting.

Cairel identified the victims as Anthony Espina, Macasandig tennis court worker, and Pet Agualing, legal age, a resident of Sentro of the said barangay.

While the suspect was identified as Jonathan, 48, married, residing at the same barangay and a Barangay councilor at Barangay 3, an urban barangay of Cagayan de Oro City.

Cairel said Espina succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds in the different parts of his body including the fatal one to the head that resulted in his instantaneous death

While Agualing was hit on his shoulder and some parts of his body. He was rushed to JR Borja Memorial Hospital where he is now recuperating.

In a media interview, Cairel revealed that prior to the incident, Borja was on a drinking spree together with Espina, Agualing, and a still-unidentified person inside a store fronting Macasandig tennis court at 1:40 am today.

The heated altercation resulted in the mauling incident between the suspect and the victims.

Borja, Cairel said, left the area with bruises and contusions to his body. A few minutes later he returned, but this time already carrying a handgun and started shooting the victims several times hitting Espina and Agualing.

Fortunately, one of the victims’ companions was not in the area anymore when Borja arrived.

Personnel from the Scene of the Crime Operatives found eight empty shells of a .45 caliber pistol at the crime scene.

Responding policemen convinced the suspect to surrender peacefully of which the latter complied.

The suspect yielded a .45 caliber pistol with two magazines loaded with four live bullets to the authorities.

Borja told police the handgun is licensed.

Cairel said the suspect is currently detained at Police station 9 mini-cell for further investigation.

He will be subjected to a paraffin test at the police crime laboratory including a ballistic test for the used handgun.

The suspect, Cairel said, will be facing cases of murder, attempted murder, and in relation to the Commission on Elections gun ban.

It can be recalled that four years ago on November 23, Borja was ambushed by still unidentified motorcycle-riding gunmen. Fortunately, the bullet just grazed his forehead.

He was driving his white Mitsubishi Montero with plate number KEX-186 near the corner of 6th-18th streets Nazareth at 7:15 am when the incident happened which was even caught in the closed-circuit television camera.

Borja, a resident at 7th-21st streets of the said barangay was from his pad and was going to visit his younger sister at Xavier Estates at the time of the attack.

Police are still facing a blank wall from the ambush incident until the shooting occurred today.
