COUNTRY’S Department of Transportation (DOTR) has supported the proposal of Cagayan de Oro 2nd District Rep. Rufus Rodriguez for a two phases Skyway/Light Rail System in the city, said in a statement Tuesday.

Rodriguez even said he already requested a P100 million budget to fund the feasibility study of the said Skyway/Light Rail System project.

“My proposed state-of-the-art Skyway/Light Rail System in CdeO is envisioned to be a safe, clean, comfortable, fast, and affordable method of mass transportation,” said Rodriguez.

He said this will also encourage people to commute instead of buying cars or motorcycles that are congesting our roads and polluting the environment,” Rodriguez stated.

In the 1st Phase, according to Rodriguez, the proposed metropolitan railway will traverse from Barangay Bugo to Bulua passing through the Butuan-Cagayan-Iligan Road (CdeO’s present highway)

The second phase is from Paseo del Rio Rotunda in Nazareth to Macabalan Pier passing thru Apolinar Velez st., J. Pacana st., and Puntod, according to Rodriquez.

Upon receipt of the letter from Rodriguez on July 25, 2022, Secretary Jaime Bautista of the Department immediately wrote a letter dated July 29, 2022, to the Public-Private Partnership Center to finance the P100M for the Project Preparation Feasibility Study for the CdeO Metropolitan Railway,

The CdeO lawmaker likewise received the support of the DOTr officials for the realization of the Mindanao Railway Project for Northern Mindanao from Jasaan, Misamis Oriental to CdeO, to Laguindingan Airport, Iligan City, and Linamon, Lanao del Norte.

Rodriguez submitted to Sec. Bautista and Usec. Chaves the feasibility study report for the said project completed as early as May 2010.

It can be recalled that Rodriguez was able to secure P60 million in 2009, during his 1st term, from the then Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) to finance the preparation of the feasibility study. The survey team was assisted by then LTFRB Director Manny Darimbang who headed the Mindanao Railway Office based in Bulua, Cagayan de Oro City.

Bautista and Chaves promised to immediately submit the feasibility study to the Inter-Agency Coordinating Council of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) for its approval. Upon approval, the DOTr will secure the funding for this Mindanao Railway project for Northern Mindanao.
