AN international environmental advocacy organization has sent a team here to look into the alleged shipment of trash from South Korea to Misamis Oriental.

Abigail Aguilar, campaigner for Greenpeace Southeast Asia-Philippines, said the group has been witness to the atrocious practice of waste trading by documenting wrong and unjust practice, and showing the world what it actually looks like, up close.

“The continued presence of the South Korean waste in our shores is nothing short of an insult to a sovereign country like the Philippines. Speaking as a Filipino who loves her country, this is unacceptable and abhorrent,” Aguilar said.

In an interview, Grace Duran-Cabus, the team leader of the Greenpeace documenting team, said they will be getting in touch with the communities near the areas where the South Korean wastes are.

She said they would also inspect the garbage up close.

The Greenpeace team would be staying in the city for three days in which time they would reveal to media their findings and recommendations.

“We join the mounting call that condemns rampant waste trading that puts the Philippines and other developing countries in peril. This only proves that recycling, even in developed countries like South Korea, Canada, and many others, is a myth and is nothing but a convenient excuse for corporations to produce and put more plastics in the environment, while governments of both developed and developing countries allow such trading to continue with impunity,” Aguilar said in the statement.
