NOT a few have complained that being kept at home makes their lives more miserable and adds up to the wrong notion that they are a useless bunch. And I agree with them no less.

I refer to the senior citizens. Under the supposed Covid19 rules, persons aged sixty years and above are supposed to stay home, along with pregnant women, and some others in the Covid19-vulnerable category.

But should that rule be absolute? I don’t think so. Senior citizens may be so categorized because of the age bracket but that should not be the sweeping basis in requiring them to stay put.

Some senior citizens are still extremely active in sports. Look at The Unperturbed Oscar who still runs the entirety of the basketball court along with younger teammates and opposing players. Then there are plenty of government officials who occupy the higher rungs of the national government who still run the reins of governance with efficiency.

That senior citizens are still a productive and effective bunch of citizens has been long recognized by the government. Just look at the mandatory retirement age of government officials and employees. Upon reaching the age of sixty, they are not forcefully retired. Why? Because of the recognition that they are still productive and could still contribute to the betterment of the lives of the population. Well most of them maybe.

Many senior citizens have aired and written complaints about why they should be “imprisoned” at home. A grade school classmate of mine, a lawyer based in Cebu City, wrote on Facebook that she was supposed to report for work because she was rehired but that was going to happen because of strict restrictions on staying at home.

Another senior citizen in our city called me up to express his dismay over some business establishments that disallowed him to enter the premises simply on account of his being a senior citizen. And I know both of these senior to be still very much physically fit, active, and productive.

Our City Administrator himself, Teddy Sabuga-a, is a senior citizen and yet he ably and effectively spends extra hours as a backroom frontliner in addition to his functions as the city administrator. I must mention another senior [he said he is and I have to believe him] who steers the Emergency Operation Center of the city, Prof. Dixon Yasay, who looks like he just turned fifty [not Shades of Grey].

No, the heading of this column is not an error. Yes, we are LGBT – Lagsik Gihapon Bisag Tigulang.
