THE two law schools in the city produced 16 new lawyers but that is not a cause for much celebration given the number of those who flunked what is considered that most difficult professional licensure examinations in the country.

A total of 86 law graduates took the 2017 bar exams from the Jesuitun Xavier University and Liceo de Cagayan University. Seventy of them were unsuccessful.

Xavier listed 13 passers of 33 examinees, including 16 fresh takers, from its College of Law or an average of 39.39 percent.

In Xavier’s list of successful examinees are Shayne Amor S. Bance, Junnieson M. Boniel, Cyril Francis S. Casiño, Kevin Jay Y. Celestiano, Precy Jade A. Cheng;

Paula Jane P. Flor, Julie Rose R.  Lapinig, Katherine Christy R. Ligcuban, Lovely Melchita C. Macario, Ayesha Ryka P. Mauyag;

Jaysie T. Micabalo, Angelica C. Mortola, and Lariza Aidie R. Ugsod.

Ten of the bar exam passers from Xavier are among its 16 first-time bar examinees or a 62.50-percent batting average.

Only three of its 17 bar exam re-takers or 17.64 percent made it.

Liceo’s College of Law, meanwhile, had 53 bar examinees, including 24 first-time takers.

Of the 53 Liceo examinees, only three passed: Reycarte M. Nambatac, Rejee Mae C. Niog, and Sitie Hadiyah Sarip.

Liceo had 29 re-takers in the 2017 bar exams.

In the 2016 bar exams, Liceo performed relatively well vis-à-vis its 2011 record of producing only one successful examinee. From one in 2011, its number of bar exam passers shoot up to 20 in 2016.

Lawyer Carlo Antonio Almirante, dean of Liceo’s College of Law, told the Gold Star Daily he would try to find out what happened, adding that he had expected no less than 10 to pass the 2017 bar exams.

“Mga maayo to amo candidates karon. Everything was designed to replicate the results last year. We have to figure out pa gyud. It’s possible naa sa borderline amo mga candidates because of a particular subject that pulled their average down, which I will find out the soonest I have the report on the grades and performance of our candidates,” reads a message Almirante sent to this paper.
