Liga ng mga Barangay Federation President Yan Lam Lim, in his privilege speech at the city council’s regular session this week, posited that aside from giving them honoraria, the city government should complete their efforts by giving barangay tanods life insurance, health, and hospital benefits.

Earlier, the City Council has passed an ordinance creating a Barangay Tanod Committee in a bid to strengthen the interplay between village officials and police in their effort to stop the proliferation of crimes and illegal drugs in Cagayan de Oro villages.

City Councilor Teodulfo Lao, Jr. for his part, claimed that the new ordinance has proposed an additional allocation every year for barangay tanods operation, pieces of training and honoraria in the 2019 budget.

He said the city government has allocated an operational amount of P15 million for initial honorarium mandating every barangay to have at least 20 members of barangay tanods.

“By the next budget, there should an increase of allowances. Currently, they only receive a minimal amount of allowance of P500 every month which is very small and insignificant on their duties and responsibilities,” he said.
