IT’S called the Beetle because it looks like, well, a beetle.

Released in 1938, the Associated Press says the Beetle is “as recognizable as the Coca-Cola bottle.” But Volkswagen has decided to stop production of the Bugs, so, if there’s one in your garage, better take good care of that because it will soon become a rare find.

Whales may go extinct, too, now that Japan is back to whale hunting again. Why can’t these hunters be like Masato Hasegawa of Rausu, Japan who switched from fishing to providing whale-watching trips, thus, attracting 33,500 tourists to his hometown in 2018 (Reuters, 7/9/19)? The switch, though, was out of necessity and not exactly due to environmental concerns. “We couldn’t get fish anymore; it just got really tough. The squid really fell, and the pollock just crashed,” Hasegawa said.

Since factory farming has harsh effects on the environment, cell-based or cultured meat is now making it possible to make meat products without killing animals. The Associated Press reported that this kind of meat “is produced by extracting cells from an animal and feeding the cells in a nutrient broth until they grow into raw meat.” If that sounds creepy, imagine a mountain of dough rising with some help from yeast. Not so creepy anymore, eh?

Somehow we knew that people would find ways to have meat without slaughtering the source. Much like the Pinoy bank that promises to find ways.

World Food Prize 2019—the “Nobel for food”—winner Simon Groot, however, still believes that vegetables and crops are the healthiest sources of good nutrition. Seed breeder Groot is the founder of Dutch East-West Seed, and in a Reuters piece, he shared what he had observed in Asia: “As populations become more wealthy and as the standard of living goes up, particularly in the rural areas, they start eating more rice, which nutritionally is not a very good thing.”

And no, he’s not Marvel’s Groot.

Since Pinas is an Asian country where unli-rice is a well-loved resto promo, its time for that to morph into unli-veggies instead.

As for bottomless iced tea, puede water na lang? Tea by itself is a healthy drink but then people thought it would taste better with sugar, milk, and scones. Tsk tsk. Embellish pa more.

But the embellished tea is delish! Best to savor it on a rainy afternoon while looking out from the window of the room with a view.

Food is always good company for the foodie who finds ways to have some quality time with his favorite food groups. Better that than worrying about Pinas’ politics: Has Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio continued to object to federalism? Did she send a text message advising congressmen to “bumoto ayon sa kanilang kagustuhan dahil ang kaniyang ama ay na set-up lamang ng mga gahaman na Gabinete na kaalyado kay Cayetano”? Is she running for president in 2022?

“So many questions but the answers are so few,” as the Side A song goes.

At least, this we’re sure of: Apple’s iTunes will go extinct as it’s being replaced by Apple Music, Apple podcasts and Apple TV.

Amazon is also undergoing changes but in its founder’s personal life as Jeff Bezos and his ex-wife MacKenzie have finally agreed on a settlement for their divorce. The mind-boggling amount is $38 billion or 19.7 million Amazon.com shares.

The Bezos’ case gives the Pinoy a bird’s-eye view of why Pinas is one of the two countries in the whole wide world that don’t allow divorce. Wanna know the name of the other country? Vatican City—imagine priests divorcing the Catholic Church.

A divorce can be costly. Considering that most of Pinas’ senators and representatives are men, for divorce to exist here is as impossible as the rabid carnivore going vegan. But not as impossible as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visiting the US now that US President Donald Trump has invited him. Kim could have reacted to the invite with a skeptical and cynical, Friends ta? But once that becomes a reality, will that put a halt to North Korea’s nuclear ambition? Hmmm. Dream on.

By the way, the Beetle has an interesting history that includes Adolf Hitler ordering Ferdinand Porsche in April 1934 to produce a “people’s car” whose German translation is volkswagen (source: the ever reliable—hehe—Wikipedia).

Yes, that’s the same Porsche behind those luxury cars.

Meanwhile, you may watch “Yesterday,” a movie about a world that has morphed into the unthinkable: no memory whatsoever of The Beatles.
