The Big Apple Pizza Co. sets itself apart from the rest, serving up pizzas in a style known as “New York Style” a concept that’s not being practiced too often here in Cagayan de Oro, but is widely sought. The company recently made a comeback last June 16 after closing its mall branch and opened at its new home in Cagayan Town Center bringing with them their best selling pizzas the Stromboli, The Big Apple, and The Mexican pizza among others.

The brand was originally from New York, and moved to the Philippines with its first branches in the bustling city of Manila. Years later, the brand was put up on sale and the ownership was bought by business partners Elvira Go and Mj Neri and was brought to its new home – here in Cagayan de Oro bringing with them, not only the brand but the flavors that came with it, and the rest is pizza history.

Big Apple Pizza Co. has changed not in flavor, but has been exploring new ones to add on their menu. The said brand was also the first to introduce the 20” pizza to the Philippines – willing to adapt to the growing demands of pizza lovers in Cagayan de Oro. Mj Neri (owner) a pizza lover at heart shared that it would also start serving 10” pizzas as they saw there was a growing demand in that market, along with new dishes, and an exclusive craft beer specially brewed for them.

The Big Apple Signature Pizza with Ham, Italian sausage, fresh garlic tomato, Pepperoni and mozzarella cheese, and finished with red and green bell peppers.

“Other than the 10” pizzas, in the coming days we would be introducing new dishes, along with a house beer, that is specially brewed for Big Apple which would be launched hopefully in our grand launching,” Neri shared.

New York Style pizza in Cagayan de Oro isn’t new as there are some in the city that offers similar to their product. But what makes Big Apple’s pizza a distinctive style pizza is the flavor it offers in each pizza are well-highlighted from the cheeses, the meat, sauce, and fresh toppings used – the flavor basically burst out in every bite, minus the grease.

Neri said “We were able to operate in food hall for a year. The comment they gave us were positive – it was not oily/greasy, the taste was really different, saying 90% really New York style pizza.”

I have my fair share of pizzas in my lifetime, some from commercial and well-known brands and some from locals. It is safe to assume that this pizza joint really is something worth trying and coming back too.
