THE recently opened coastal road from the “Galaxy” junction in Gusa up to Valenzuela road in Agora, Lapasan has noticeably alleviated vehicular traffic along CM Recto Avenue. This is because of the diversion of heavy trucks and container vans that enter the city from the east starting from “Galaxy”.

Before the opening of that section of the coastal road, trucks that were bound for Agora, Lapasan and beyond used to pass through CM Recto thus literally constricting the highway.

The estimated length of the container vans and trucks is about four or five cars thus the diversion of the truck’s passage has provided more spaces for smaller cars along CM Recto. This has made the passage of cars on the main highway easier and faster.

The coastal road is supposed to traverse several lots from Valenzuela road in Agora towards the Puntod-Kauswagan bridge. However, right-of-way problems affecting four private lots have prevented the DPWH to connect the Valenzuela section to the bridge.

Information we received indicates that the DPWH has already referred the matter to the Office of the Solicitor General for legal action which could take time to resolve.

If the private lot owners will only cooperate, traffic in and around Agora, Lapasan up to Gaabucayan, Corrales and Julio Pacana streets will definitely ease up.

And, once the Valenzuela gate of the Philippine Ports Authority will have been opened, thanks to the Philippine Coast Guard, huge trucks or container vans from the east of the city that are bound for the pier will no longer have to use Corrales Avenue or Julio Pacana street thus further easing up vehicular traffic in these areas.

Those who use the Gusa-Agora section of the coastal road will have to traverse the stretch with caution because work by the DPWH is still on-going at – sidewalks and portions of the drainage system are still being completed.  At night, motorists still have to rely on the lumens provided by their headlights because the coastal road has no streetlights yet.

Happy and safe motoring, everyone!
