Mindanaoan Meets World

I’m currently writing this just a day after my mother celebrated her 65th birthday and her last day of work. She’s finally retiring after many beautiful years as an educator. There were two send-off parties for her. Dozens of her students, colleagues and even topanking university officials honored her by sharing their fond memories of her, some anecdotes and even performing special song and dance numbers. Needless to say, those were emotion-filled days not only for our mother but for my siblings and I as well. Witnessing just how loved Mama is – that was testament of how influential, wonderful and valued she is as a professional.

She may be retiring but Mama still has so many plans. These include continuing her award-winning blog (yes, blogging runs in the family!), expanding her garden, accepting more speaking engagements (she specializes in peace education) and yes, traveling and discovering the rest of the world. Her retirement years will obviously be busy and exciting.

Watching my mother being feted the last few days made me think of the things I also probably want to do when my time comes (I just can’t do the gardening bit, unfortunately – I don’t have a green thumb!). That will still be a long time from now but I like to plan! I hope that my friends and some of you, my valued readers, would consider these as well:

  1. Continue volunteering. I think the world needs more volunteers – people who have the initiative, drive and heart to give back. We can volunteer via charitable, non-profit organizations and even online! I’ve been part of the United Nations Online Volunteer group for many years. You can sign up at www.onlinevolunteering.org Alternatively, if you have a personal advocacy, you can start a Facebook page and invite your friends to help you out.
  2. Write a book. These days, it’s easy for you to write and share stories. Who knows, you may even be discovered, get published or have your stories turned into TV series! Sign up at www.wattpad.com
  3. Start a blog. Learn how to blog. Start sharing experiences, photos, videos etc. to the rest of the world! You can even earn through your blog. In fact, I have an offer. Since I like helping people start their own blogs, gather at least 4 other people who are interested to learn how to start one and I’ll teach you guys for free!

Are these part of your retirement plans as well? Retirement, after all, shouldn’t slow us down. Instead, let’s treat it as the best opportunity to finally see, experience and DO!

And to all retirees and would-be retirees out there – continue celebrating life!

And to my loving Mama Reina – happy birthday to you. To more adventures around the globe with you! Love you with all my heart.

Til next ish! Connect with me! See you at my Mindanaoan.com blog. Safe travels, everybody!
