OROQUIETA City – Make sure that the company/business group you’re joining is registered with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) or the Securities and Exchange Commission (Sec).

This advice came from Delia M. Ayano, Provincial Director of DTI-Misamis Occidental, who said all consumers should do this, especially if the business offered to them is an “investment product,” to avoid being victimized by a scam.

Ayano warned the consumers never to divulge, if asked to give their personal information, such as, bank account, credit card and personal information numbers (PIN) and passwords.

They should also beware if the offered investment does not give a receipt or proof of payment or if they are told that they won in a lotto contest or a raffle that they did not participate.

On the other hand, Maritess B. Alcampado, Chief of Consumers’ Welfare Division (CWD) of DTI MisOcc reminded the consumers to keep all proofs and records of transactions, such as, receipts, contracts, agreements or certificates of investments and other documents of similar nature.

“These documents are very much needed to support complaints against companies/business groups that are engaged in scams,” she said.

For more information and complaints regarding pyramid and other scams, the consumers may go to the nearest DTI or SEC office, Alcampado added.
