Change is inevitable in this line of work. Traveling, writing, exploring, and photographing different stories gives you a daily dose of wake up calls and realizations that could get you hyped up or can dishearten you. With the summer season looming in just a few days, tourists from all over the country (or foreign) will be barging in on nearby destinations.

However, for the travel photographer in me, I might be approaching things in a different light this year. Summer as we all know is that long stretch of days where we go out, relieve our stress, and take a hold of a good rest and recreation. However, with the popularity of online and social media posts on nearby destinations, you’ll be somewhat falling in line for that long time favorite spot of yours in that beach, campsite, or even hiking trail.

Squad goals, barkada goals, family outings, or just yourself, you have to plan your escapade beforehand. Take into account the travel time from between bus stations, queuing up for a ticket, waiting for the transportation vehicle, and getting to your accommodation.

Many believe that its just a walk in the park, but believe me, it’s not. If you want to make the most of your vacation with less hassle to none, you have to organize your trip schedule. Make an itinerary in your pocket notebook or smart-phone; smart travelers know where to go and how to get there on the least possible time.

Make reservations by emailing, messaging their social media accounts, or calling the place where you’ll be staying. You’ll rest easy knowing that you’ll have an accommodation with a warm bed waiting for you as you about your commute.

Vacation is about fun, relaxation, and that dire need to get away from the norms. You don’t have to pack a whole suitcase or luggage of clothes if you’re going on a 4 day trip. You may have this sudden urge to show off your collection of mouth watering branded fashion line up of clothes, but why are you really there in the first place? Is it for others to see that you’re this walking closet or to chill, lay back, and have a good time? Wearing what makes you feel good about yourself is also part of smart traveling, and that is why I pack light and carry only the essential clothes.

Lightweight, quick to dry, doesn’t get hot during humid situations, and doesn’t stink even when you’ve worn it the whole day after hours of hiking or physical activity; those are some of my preferences when it comes to what I bring to my travels or assignments. On a personal note though, years on back I was this blind follower that imported outdoor apparel brands were better over local ones, but I was proven wrong recently by the home-grown 8a Performance.

Its pricing is reasonable and with high quality products, the brand supports local athletes and individuals who are seeking to develop more outdoor activities for everyone to enjoy. The shirt and pants that I wore for that 6 day incursion from Gitagum to Iligan was made by them, and it literally performed beyond expectations.

I don’t bring an arsenal of cameras and lenses when I go about my assignments, I do however just bring 2 – 3 lenses (a wide lens, telephoto, and a prime) for my travel kit. I believe that working with what you have is a must, but not preparing yourself is definitely a big no.

Maybe from traveling much and doing photography, I treat my vacations and assignments the same way. Travel light, travel smart, and travel with a purpose. Not just to enjoy but to learn something about the place, the locals, and yourself.
