According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the epicenter of the earthquake was nine kilometers east of Carrascal town.

An intensity V tremor was felt within the towns of Carrascal, Cantilan, Madrid, Carmen, and Lanuza, while intensity IV was felt in Surigao City, Tandag City, Magsaysay and Gingoog City in Misamis Oriental.

Adel de Guzman, chief of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office of Surigao del Sur said about 25 people are being treated for injuries at the district hospital in Madrid.

“We fear that the reported number of injured people will rise as data from the different local government units have yet to arrive, as some of those injured are being treated at their respective rural health stations,” said Guzman.

Guzman added that most of those injured during the earthquake were still in bed when the earthquake happened.

“Most were yet to get out of bed so they were caught off guard; we have reports of injuries from falling cabinets, broken glass and even collapsing walls,” said Guzman.

Guzman pointed out that reports of damaged government buildings, schools, churches, houses, and bridges are still being assessed and evaluated in the ground.
