A TRUCK accidentally crushed a man and his wife on the highway in  Opol, Misamis Oriental, late Tuesday night.

Misamis Oriental police spokesperson Insp. Princess Joy Velarde identified the couple as Arvin Mabao, 44, and his wife Marijun, 36.

The two were on a motorcycle and were heading home towards Zone 3, Barra, Opol, when they figured in the road accident.

Velarde said the 16-wheel truck, loaded with softdrinks, was Iligan-bound and had just come from Villanueva town in Misamis Oriental. It was driven by 51-year-old Edgardo Macasarte.

The woman was a merchandiser at a popular grocery store at Limketkai center. They are survived by one child.

“Nahulog ang duha sa ilang gisakyang motor, unya nalatayan sa  ligid sa truck. Ma-o tong dead on the spot intawon ang mga bikitma,” Velarde said.

SPO1 Arnel Acero of the Opol police said the accident happened at around 10 pm Tuesday.

Acero said Arvin attempted to get past the truck but the motorcycle ended up being hit by one of the truck’s front wheels.

Mabao couple’s bodies were dragged and crushed.

Macasarte, the truck drover, said it was not his fault. He said he was driving at a speed of only about 40 kph.

“Nakita ko man nga naay kalit lang mi overtake sa ako. Mao tong mi-apply ko’g brake apan wala gyud madala naigo ko gyud sila,” Macasarte said.

He denied that he had a drink too many.

Macasarte has been placed under the custody of Opol police and is facing a complaint for reckless imprudence resulting in double homicide and damage to properties. (Nitz Arancon and Joey Nacalaban)
