Every February of every year, the country celebrates National Arts Month which started in the signing of the Presidential Proclamation 683, in 1991. Cagayan de Oro is not left behind in these celebrations as the city have been the haven of upcoming national talents.

The National Arts Month in the City of Golden Friendship was opened with a visual art exhibit of young and vibrant talents from the Lourdes College- Integrated Basic Education Department last February 2 -6, 2019 at the 2nd floor East Concourse, Limketkai Mall, Cagayan de Oro City and was transferred for a continued art exhibit at the lobby of the LC-IBED from February 7-10, 2019 in time for the opening of the school’s 91st Foundation Anniversary.

Lourdes College have been enthusiastic in supporting its students in developing the visual creativity and the acting capability of its elementary, junior and senior high students. When the program was opened last November of 2018, eager students who has potential in the visual and theater arts joined and have undergone training and workshops. A 10 module training on visual arts was conducted by me, sharing to them the knowledge of basic skills in drawing, painting and composing art works.

The students who joined the said painting workshop have been given the chance to develop step by step on how to manipulate colors in creating visual images. Also, a theater workshop was conducted by artist David Yañez, the students were being taught on the dynamics of theater production and stage acting. During this workshop the participants were given the time to practice characterization and was challenged to self-expression where the students inhibitions and shyness was being channeled into performance.

“Plato” a theater play by the theater group of Lourdes College Integrated Basic Education Department was launched and performed to the public last February 8, 2019 at the LC-IBED gymnasium.  Plato, a bisaya word for plate have been a silent witness to the lives of every family. The story was taken on these angle to showcase every family’s closeness and also its struggles. A realistic look on how family values have changed in these millennial generation.

This projects were the ideas of S. Ma. Asteria L. Emadin, RVM., Principal of LC-IBED together with its Academic Coordinator Ms. Evelyn L. Mosqueda, who was hoping to integrate to the students creativity and artistic excellence among its students. Special thanks to Limketkai Mall who are supportive in providing avenue during the “Unang Likha” art exhibit, to the IBED – PTA Exe-Com President Mrs. Cecilia de la Cerna and to all parents who have supported their kids in the arts.
